When the Hindi adaptation of Norman Jewison’s Send me no flowers was first drafted by writer Ranbir Singh in the late 70s, late thespian Dinesh Thakur wasn’t happy with the title — Afsos Hum Na Honge.

It was a time when Hindi theatre was dominated by dramas which commented on society. Thakur had staged a play at Prithvi Theatre called Mahabhoj, which had 17 people on stage and five in the audience (which included Jennifer, Sanjna and ).

Dinesh wanted to attempt a light-hearted comedy, which appealed to all and renamed the adaptation to Hai Mera Dil(HMD).
